Type 1 Diabetes (Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus) IDDM

BRM has multiple rat models of Type 1 Diabetes including spontaneous and induced disease development. We have extraordinary experience managing these animals’ complex medical care during both short and long-term studies. Our animal models are easily adapted for the testing of compounds for a multitude of applications. They provide populations of genetically uniform subjects that can be maintained under environmentally controlled conditions.

The BB/Wor Rat Spontaneous

The BB/Wor rat develops spontaneous and viral-induced syndromes of autoimmune diabetes mellitus, and is the best rat model of human Type 1 diabetes.

Salient features include:

Genetic predisposition
Abrupt onset of insulin dependent, ketosis- prone diabetes
Autoimmune destruction of pancreatic ß-cells

Other features of the BB/Wor rat that identify it as the best rat model of human IDDM include:

Their inbred status (>100 generations of sib matings)
High (80-95%) incidence of diabetes among both genders
Average age of onset of diabetes at 70 days

The BBDP/Wor rats develop more severe and more “human like” complications of diabetes than NOD, STZ or alloxan models.
