Type 2 Diabetes BBZDR/Wor Rat Model

BRM provides the BBZDR/Wor rat model of type 2 diabetes and specializes in the long-term animal models.

The BBZDR/Wor Rat is an established model system used to study Type 2 diabetes and resulting diabetic complications.

Lean non-diabetic littermates, non-diabetic obese females and obese diabetic males can all be provided for tightly controlled, meaningful experiments.

The Model:

  • Shares MHC of Type 1 Rats
  • Islets are Hyperplastic
  • Diabetics have diminished GLUT- 2 transporters
  • The recessive fa gene causes obesity and insulin resistance.
  • 95% of the males but less than 5% of the females become hyperglycemic.

Our highly qualified staff can design and implement experimental protocols to test the efficacy of compounds on diabetic complications, including:

  • atherosclerotic heart disease,
  • retinopathy,
  • neuropathy and nephropathy.
